A Teach-In: Practicing Solidarity Journalism through Living with Drones

Join us for a session on how journalists can center non-dominant perspectives, producing journalism that serves the public. Three years into the documentation of a genocide in Gaza, join stitched! studio for a participatory session exploring how journalists can shift public narratives, center non-dominant perspectives, and produce care-centered work that empowers publics in democracies. Gaza remains one of the most misrepresented and underreported regions in the media. Why is this the case? How can we respond to this reality? What does it mean to produce journalism in a profession that claims to challenge power and speak truth to it? This event, brought to you by stitched! live journalism studio demonstrates a (close-to) decolonial approach to centre dismissed, ignored or politically decentred narratives. By using case studies from previous live journalism shows -- Living with Drones, Childhood, Interrupted and Harmed in Hamilton -- this teach-in illustrates a way for journalists to develop and share stories with competence and standards of care by adopting a solidarity journalism framework. What is the role of journalism in democracies? How does one create informed, engaged communities committed to ethical, relevant and important storytelling? In this teach-in, attendees will be introduced to unconventional journalism roles like those of the community gatherer and the storylistener. By equipping attendees with knowledge and resources, we ensure that voices from Gaza are heard and amplified beyond the constraints of mainstream outlets. This teach-in led by stitched! practitioners will help attendees: Centre the value and proposition of solidarity journalism (theorized by Professor Anita Varma) as a framework for journalistic work Demonstrate its effectiveness through scenes from Living with Drones Discuss a stitched! trauma-informed approach to storytelling, including using calls-to-action as a method of democratic engagement and journalistic responsibility Offer tools, resources, and strategies for amplifying underreported narratives through independent journalism, social media and advocacy efforts.
