The L.A.-via-Jersey guitarist born Steve Marion\, whose credits include session work for Amen Dunes\, Paul Simon\, and Deradoorian\, had no grand plan for making it: he would simply book some time at a friends studio\, hunker down\, and play. Hes always allowed intuition to guide him\, composing his jubilantly tuneful instrumentals as he records them\, but this time\, he felt freer than ever to keep the seams showing\, and dont polish everything\, and keep it raw\, and alive\, and electric-feeling\, he says. He chose the title\, Lukes Garage\, as a tribute to his pal and sometime collaborator Luke Temple\, but also for the anything-goes adolescent innocence it conjured: the feeling of heading over to a buddys house\, turning up the amps\, and creating your own world. In the world of Lukes Garage\, a passage of music that feels like a sketch in progress might open into a hook so finely wrought\, so obviously right\, that you have a hard time believing you havent heard it before. The two passages may in fact be one and the same. There are songs that feel destined to soundtrack memories of windows-down road trips\, and those more suited to moments of hushed intimacy. Original drummer Cy Costabile\, was later replaced by Bobby Schneider and the saxophonist Juli Wood was replaced by keyboard/sax man Bob Jennings. In its prime\, the band had a large following in Milwaukee\, where they were pretty much the house band at the late\, lamented Century Hall. They travelled well too\, with fans in the Twin Cities\, Chicago\, Madison and even New York where they played legendary clubs like CBGBs\, The Knitting Factory and The Lone Star. Their only record\, Top Happy\, came out in 198-. It featured a song produced by Nick Lowe\, a fan who had stumbled across them after playing a show in Milwaukee. The record got great reviews and could have been the start of even bigger things\, but like many bands\, people were pulling\, and being pulled\, in different directions. The positive result of their breakup was two\, then three very vital and entertaining acts. There was Semi-Twang\, which concentrated on Johns songs and did a record\, Salty Tears for Warner Brothers that gathered more love than sales. Paul and Robin continued with the beefed up and ever-popular Milwaukeeans\, releasing a record in the 1990s on Shenachie that got radio play around the country. DESCRIPTION:The Lemonheads returned in 2025 with Love Chant (out via Fire Records\, October 24th)\, their first studio album in nearly two decades - a bold\, melodic reaffirmation of Evan Dando's singular songwriting voice. Written across continents and recorded primarily in São Paulo\, Brazil\, where Dando now resides\, Love Chant finds the frontman reconnecting with longtime collaborators while introducing new creative voices. It's a record of fresh starts and familiar sounds - emotionally raw\, melodically rich\, and unmistakably Lemonheads. The new album features contributions from J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr)\, Juliana Hatfield\, Tom Morgan\, Bryce Goggin\, Erin Rae\, and Nick Saloman of The Bevis Frond. It's a diverse but coherent work - from the full-throttle hooks of \, "rdquo" -> Deep End" to the spectral softness of \, "rdquo" -> The Key Of Victory\," and the Modern Lovers-like drive of the title track. Co-released alongside Dando's forthcoming memoir Rumours Of My Demise (via Faber\, November 6th)\, Love Chant marks both a return and a reckoning - the sound of an artist who's lived\, lost\, and located the thread once again. Formed in Boston in 1986\, The Lemonheads have long thrived on that intersection between chaos and charm. With a revolving cast built around Dando's melodic instincts and ragged charisma\, their early punk roots were forged across three scrappy albums on local label Taang! before signing to Atlantic Records and releasing 1990's Lovey. It was on tour for that record in Australia where Dando connected with Tom Morgan and future bandmate Nic Dalton - a meeting that reshaped the band's songwriting and sound. Their commercial breakthrough came with 1992's It's A Shame About Ray and 1993's Come On Feel The Lemonheads\, both records that married punk energy with melodic pop\, and established Dando as one of alternative rock's most compelling figures. National TV appearances followed\, and so did the tabloid glare - by the late '90s\, the music sometimes took a backseat to Dando's unpredictable\, chaotic public persona.
