Join FreeMindfulness / Vipassanā meditation is the practice of bringing gentle awareness to our present moment with openness and curiosity. It can help us to achieve greater focus, to bring clarity, emotional balance, inner calm, and mental well-being. Join us for an hour and a half of mindfulness meditation with the Nomad Monk (Bhante Revata) as we explore basic mindfulness meditation techniques. This class is suitable for beginners and experienced meditators alike who would like to refresh their practice. Bhante Revata (Chipamong Chowdhury) is a Theravada monk, contemplative teacher, monastic activist, and storyteller. He teaches Vipassana meditation/Buddhism at the Chautauqua Institution in Western New York. He also taught courses on Contemporary Buddhism, Buddhism and Modernity, and Pali, and gave lectures on various aspects of Buddhism at American, Canadian, and European Universities. He is a co-editor of the book Human Dignity: Practices, Discourses, and Transformations. Bhante's essays, articles, and book chapters have been published by the Harvard Divinity Bulletin, Journal of Contemporary Buddhism, Buddhist Studies Reviews, and Journal of Religion and Popular Culture, among other publications. Bhante also presented his research papers at several universities, including Oxford University, Harvard University, Columbia University, and universities in Finland and Denmark. Currently, Bhante is working on 3 projects: (1) Biography of Sivali, (2) Stories of the former monks, and (3) his memoir. Defining himself as a nomad monk or a global citizen, he travels extensively in North America, Europe, and Asia, teaching nomadic mindfulness, inner resources, active care, and human dignity. Bhante studied Buddhist studies, Sanskrit, and religious studies/South Asian studies at the University of Toronto, Canada, Naropa University, Colorado, and Arizona State University, and was a Fellow at the Center for Justice at Columbia University, New York. Originally, Bhante is from Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh where he was ordained as a novice at the age of 15 and took higher ordination (Upasampada) in 2001 in Myanmar. He was trained in traditional monastic tradition, Buddhist education, and Vipassana meditation in Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Bhante speaks several languages, including Sri Lankan, Burmese, Bangla, and Hindi. Bhante also holds many positions in educational organizations, including as the spiritual advisor to the Rainforest Foundation, US, a board member of the Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies/The World Dignity University, and coordinator for the IVECA International Virtual Schooling. He is a member of the American Academy of Religion, Association of Asian Studies, and International Association of Buddhist Studies.
