Bodies of Water: Hydrofeminism in Contemporary Art

Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, Sara Garzón will lead a discussion covering two readings that focus on the significance of water in contemporary art. Attendees will explore Astrida Neimanis's concept of hydrofeminism alongside Lisa Blackmore's notion of the hydrocommons, examining how artists engage water as a cosmopolitical medium that reconfigures relationships among bodies, territories and more-than-human worlds. A tour of the exhibition Layered Lives will further consider what Blackmore describes as the liquid turn in contemporary art and its implications for artistic research. The two brief readings are provided here and are excerpts from Lisa Blackmore's Art for the Hydrocommons: Rethinking Human-Water Relations in Latin America (pg. 24 - 44) and Hydrofeminism: Or, On Becoming a Body of Water (pg. 85 - 99). The program is supported by the UF Center for the Humanities and Public Sphere and offered in conjunction with their speaker series on Blue Humanities: humanistic approaches to understanding the cultural, social and personal significance of water.
