SUMMARY:Jessica Lea Mayfield / Rachel Bobbitt
DESCRIPTION:Doors: 8PM / Show: 9PM / 21+When I was recording what would bec
ome Miss Obliteration with Day Wave I started to get the eerie sense that
I was writing more than lyrics\, but predictive themes. I was married to m
y second husband but could see the writing on the wall\, a metaphorical to
rnado was about to tear through my life I denied it. The record kept getti
ng pushed back for various reasons\, and I kept thinking it was getting pu
shed back by a greater force\, now 3 years later my life is entirely diffe
rent and I am radically changed as a person. From my spiritual beliefs\, t
o my person goals and dreams and just in general\, nearly everything. I ha
d a feeling this album wouldnt see light until that chapter of my life com
plete. After releasing music made primarily in basements\, Something We Al
l Got is the bands first flirtation with studio recording. The edges are s
 till sharp\, however\, with some parts assembled from time-honored lo-fi m
ethods and fun\, personally-sourced samples seeping into the production. T
he sound is explosive and upbeat\, with euphoric guitars\, bubbly synth li
nes\, speedy live and programmed drums\, and all other manner of sound con
stantly colliding. cootie catcher has three songwritersSophia Chavez (voca
 ls\, synths)\, Anita Fowl (vocals\, bass)\, and Nolan Jakupovski (vocals\,
guitar)all of whom have distinctive voices but manage to overlap in their
writing on shared concerns like navigating the lines of romantic and plat
onic relationships\, their citys social scenes\, and struggles in both the
microcosmic experience of playing in a band and the zoomed-out challenges
of living through late-stage capitalism. Joy still touches every surface
of Something We All Got. Quarter Note Rock bounces around the room in a fi
t of jangling guitar chords\, scratched samples\, and interplay between br
eakbeat loops and somersaulting live drums. Its a blast of positivity desp
ite lyrics about how disappointing it can be to meet your heroes. A smilin
g electro pop instrumental supports having to step painfully away from an
almost realized love on Gingham Dress\, a song that subverts themes of dom
esticity as a backdrop for the dashed wilt of hopeless devotion. The non-c
onfrontational anthem Puzzle Pop cascades and soars through an examination
of needing to ask more from others before concluding in a swirl of sample
 s. cootie catcher rolls down hills and jumps through flaming hoops through
out Something We All Got without ever muting the visceral emotions that dr
ive these songs. Theres a palpable tension between the bands exhilarating
sonics and the raw\, often uneasy sentiments expressed\, but its an integr
al part of what makes them unique. Rather than hide\, cootie catcher is in
stead fearlessly direct\, running full-speed toward every confusion and ex
citement\, and embracing the reality theyre in.
