Community Conversations: Countering Counter-Revolution

On September 17th, Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly and Derecka Purnell are joining the Community Church of New York as Community Conversation partners for a session we're calling Countering Counter-Revolution. Community Conversations is a program presented by the Community Church of New York, aiming to facilitate open dialogue with movement leaders and thinkers on justice issues that demand our engagement, understanding, and action. Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly is a critical Black Studies scholar of political theory, political economy, intellectual history, and political and historical sociology who serves as Associate Professor of African American Studies at Wayne State University. She obtained her Ph.D., African Diaspora Studies, University of California- Berkeley and her M.A., African American Studies, University of California- Berkeley. She is the author of Black Scare/Red Scare: Theorizing Capitalist Racism in the United States and the co-author, with Dr. Gerald Horne, of W.E.B. Du Bois: A Life in American History. Co-editor, with Dr. Jodi Dean, of Organize, Fight, Win: Black Communist Women's Political Writings and of Reproducing Domination: On the Caribbean and the Postcolonial State with Dr. Aaron Kamugisha and Dr. Percy Hintzen. Derecka Purnell is a writer, organizer, cultural worker, movement lawyer, and friend. She is the author of Becoming Abolitionists: Police, Protests, and the Pursuit of Freedom . She is studying and building political homes where people can love, study, experiment, and thrive together. She received her JD from Harvard Law School, her BA from the University of Missouri- Kansas City, and studied public policy and economics at the University of California- Berkeley as a Public Policy and International Affairs Law Fellow. Her writing has been published widely, including inThe New York Magazine, The New York Times, The Atlantic, Boston Review, Teen Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, The Harvard Journal of African American Policy, and Cal Law Review. She has lectured, studied, and strategized on social movements across North America, Africa, Australia, and Europe. Derecka and Dr. Charisse will be in conversation with Conor Q. Foley, Director of Community Engagement at the Community Church and author of The Bible and Police Violence in the United States, published by Routledge this May.
