Healthy Forests & Prepared Populaces

The Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick is hosting an engaging and timely discussion on forest resilience, conservation, and preparedness in the face of environmental change. Maine is the most forested state, yet, we have not experienced as many fires as our northern and western provinces and states. This special program will explain both our current situation, our future vulnerabilities and what we can do about each. Hear from Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL) as they highlight the importance of community awareness and climate action. Luke Frankel, NRCM Woods, Waters, & Wildlife Program Director and Staff Scientist, will follow with an update on perspectives on statewide conservation efforts and policy initiatives. The feature presentation will be given by John Hagan and explore how older-growth forests are identified, the factors contributing to their decline, and practical strategies for protecting these critical ecosystems. William Guidon of Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will touch on increasing forest fire risks, what they mean for our region, and how preparedness efforts can help mitigate impacts. He will conclude the program with a practical overview of emergency preparedness, offering guidance on how individuals and communities can better prepare for climate-related risks, including wildfires.
