About This Event

Click here to join the Zoom session. The Stockbridge Library invites writers and would-be-writers to take a leap into creative and skillful writing. The Stockbridge Writers will meet on Zoom on Tuesday from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. This program is free and open to the public. All writing levels are welcome. About Stockbridge Writers: Stockbridge Writers is a Writing Practice group that meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for 90 minutes on Zoom. All writers at all levels are welcome to join at any time. Writing Practice was developed by Zen practitioner Natalie Goldberg, author of Writing Down the Bones (1986). It's a method for getting ideas onto the page, for keeping the wheels oiled. Writers are offered a series of prompts as writing suggestions for about forty minutes--topics range widely and wildly, from a great pair of shoes, the long way home, or Sunday brunch to the song that was playing, the dark places, or the last time I saw her. Participants are then invited to read their work aloud, but there is no obligation to do so. And there is no editing or critique of the work--this is not a class or a workshop. Instead, writers are invited to become active listeners, to both their own work and the work of others. Writing Practice is for all writers--those writing daily, those thinking they need to be writing more, or those needing to get back in the groove. It's for new writers, fiction writers, professional writers, academic writers, or published writers looking to restart a project. The practice is for those who like to tell stories and those who like to listen to them. It's a place to explore all types of writing--fiction, memoir, prose, epistolary, even poetry--wherever your pen wants to roam. It's a time to work through ideas without judgment, to formulate a new style, to watch for patterns in one's voice. It enables the sensitive storyteller to find courage and build a platform. From the Writers: This is a place where I can be myself, pretty much. Once a week, I put on paper my own thoughts and hope that someone will enjoy reading the pages someday--there's the potential to take what I write more seriously. Writing for an audience can carry a lot of risk--exposure, for a start, potential failure, accusations of an over-developed sense of one's own importance and societal worth (just a few of the voices in my head), but Stockbridge Writers has none of that: Here, the writing just is. -Lynn Bogarde This Tuesday morning session will inspire me and help me overcome the writer's block I've been fighting. Another writer made me laugh out loud this morning; that's the perfect inspiration to write. Writing practice needs to be just that, practice. Sit down and do it. Later I can ask myself: Does the subject matter? Can a story be worthy if not specific but just for fun? A prompt can and has given birth to a story that I wanted to write. It was worthy and it was published. Who knew something in your closet would trigger a gem of a tale? -Betsy Smith Interested? Questions? Contact Host: Ramelle Pulitzer [email protected]
